Sam and his wife have been living in the same house for 40 years. They are empty nesters and decided it was time to downsize. They realized they had far more capacity than they needed in their old house. Their new home is one-third of the size of their previous home, and that’s all they need. However, they had to work out strategies to adapt to a new kitchen. They discovered they could get by with much less, but they still wanted to create a kitchen that grows with them as they age.

Something Sam learned from their downsizing process and would recommend to all his friends, “Do it now when you are able to” have the ability to plan for accessibility for ageing needs.

That’s when Caroline Vincent, a design expert from ShelfGenie, used her expertise to meet their needs. In this video, she explains the process she used to customize the kitchen for the new owner.

Tips to Create a Kitchen that Grows with You as You Age

  1. Create a shelf within a shelf to maximize the height of a drawer
  2. Pay attention to the kitchen triangle design principle
  3. Plan enough room for potential wheelchair/walker accessibility

We found this video super interesting and full of great information. A functional kitchen is essential when you downsize and want to live comfortably for years to come as you age in place.
