out of chaos transforms garage to pristine storage area

Linda Chu of Out of Chaos transforms a garage into a pristine storage space.

The homeowners, a blended family of five people, had recently moved into this home. Consequently, their garage was overflowing with clutter. First, Linda helped the homeowners sort through all of their things. During the process, she asked questions to prompt their thinking about what to keep and what to let go. Linda finds the following questions are helpful for anyone having trouble letting go of clutter.

  • When was the last time you used this item?
  • Did you even remember you owned it?
  • If I snuck in during the night and took it, would you miss it?

After the sort and purge, it was time for the homeowners to organize the items they wanted to keep. In order to take advantage of vertical storage space in this garage, Linda ordered extra tall shelves. The shelves are made from galvanized steel. They are rust-resistant, very sturdy yet light-weight. Linda worked with the homeowners to place all similar items in bins with bold, easy-to-read labels. Labels encourage people to put items back where they belong.

Because this is a large family, kitchen space is at a premium. Linda created a small pantry section in the garage to help ease congestion in the kitchen. She used galvanized steel bins with adjustable spacers to accommodate various fruits and vegetables.

Linda also created a small “mudroom” section in the garage. This allows the family to store coats, boots, and shoes in the garage, thus the clutter inside the home is kept to a minimum.
