Garage sales are a great way to get rid of unwanted items, but they are also a lot of work. Here to give us some tips on how to organize your garage sale is Professional Organizer, Linda Chu from Out of Chaos.

Before the Sale

  • Gather all items and separate like items into groups. This will help customers find what they are looking for.
  • Place items with multiple parts such as electronics and toys in labelled ziplock bags.
  • Label all items with the selling price. Choose negotiable prices – it’s part of the garage sale charm.
  • Use various colours of painters’ tape to indicate prices. For example, all items with green tape would be $1.00.
  • Have a definitive time and date for your sale. Specify an alternate “rain date” if you will be unable to hold your sale in bad weather.
  • Advertise your sale well. Use your local classified ads, post signs around your neighbourhood, and use social media to create interest.
  • Be prepared for early birds. There are people who may knock at your door an hour before your sale starts. In your advertisements, specify “no early birds” or request that early birds pay double.

Garage Sale Day

  • Have a power source available so potential buyers can ensure electrical equipment works. You may need to have an extra lightbulb handy if you are selling lamps.
  • Provide a small mirror so people can see themselves when they try on the jewelry. Having a full-length mirror is great if you are selling clothes.
  • Ironing linens and clothing beforehand will help you get a better price.
  • Place books on a table or in a box/bin with the spines facing up to keep them orderly throughout the sale.
  • Remember to label items you are not selling such as your display tables and mirrors.
