3 Things You Should Know About Gift Cards

When we help clients organize, we often come across gift cards piled up or tucked away. Without a doubt, these little plastic wonders are popular for shoppers and retailers. In fact, you can’t help but notice the wide variety of options at the huge gift card kiosks stationed at many retailers. You can get gift cards to almost everything from local restaurants to movie chains! While they can be a real time-saver for shoppers (and we like saving time!), there are a few things you should know:

1. Many consumers never use their gift cards.

According to Consumer Reports, about one-third of consumers who receive gift cards don’t use them. That is a lot of unclaimed cards that benefit only the retailers! If you’re harbouring some cards, here are some tips:

  • Use them right away if possible, so you don’t forget about them.
  • Store them in a logical place. If your wallet is already too full, consider housing them by your computer if you shop online or by the front door so they’ll be at hand when you leave the house.
  • Write the value on the back. Once you have used all the funds, cut them in half and discard them. It’s annoying when you come across a card and can’t remember if you have any money left on it.

2. Gift cards shouldn’t expire.

Since 2008, BC Regulations stipulate that cards with a monetary value can’t expire. There are a few exceptions, like short-term promotional gift cards. This is good to know when you’re cleaning up, and you make a surprise discovery! However, if the store closes or goes bankrupt, you may not be able to use the card at all.

3. Not everyone likes them.

If you want to buy a gift card for someone, make sure your recipient will enjoy it. While many people love them, others appreciate a more personal gift. (Alternatively, many are happy with cold hard cash!) Think of your recipient and make sure it’s a retailer they’ll appreciate.

Whether you love them or hate them, gift cards are here to stay. So be sure to use them or pass them on to someone who will. (Tip: Many charities will accept gift cards!) Otherwise, they just become clutter (and a waste of someone’s money)!

  1. Great article, Linda.

I had an old Hudson Bay gift card given to me a lot of years ago. It was so old that the Hudson Bay company couldn’t find it in their system to see if any further money was left on it. But the Hudson Bay Company did something so wonderful. They got someone to finally find my card number in an archived database and discovered that there was still $25 on it. They ended up issuing me a new card with that $25 balance. So don’t throw away your old cards, unless you truly know they are empty. 🙂

    1. Nice work Danielle. Great to hear about the above and beyond service at The Bay. $25 is $25. It could have easily been $250 or more!
