What to Do With Old Postage Stamps

While you may not be a stamp collector, you may find yourself wondering what to do with old postage stamps. Perhaps you’ve inherited them, discovered old letters in a drawer, or even stashed some exotic stamps away over the years because they looked kind of cool. However, if you do not appreciate these tiny pieces of art, there’s no point in tucking them away and forgetting about them. Here are some options for giving these stamps a second life.

Display Them

If you’re creative, the options for display are nearly endless. Some postage stamps are gorgeous and intricately designed. Wear them, frame them and more. Check out some ideas I found on Pinterest here.

Sell Them

If you have the time and interest, you can try to sell your stamps. Be sure to do some online research to learn about the process and pitfalls (there’s a lot of information and advice out there). However, it’s important to note that most stamps have very little cash value. So be warned – don’t expect a windfall from the collection Uncle Joe left you!

Donate Them

Sending them to a charity is an option. Volunteers will do the legwork to sort and sell your stamps to raise money for their organization. We’ve listed some charities that collect old postage stamps on our Resources under Books and Hobbies. Typically, you will have to mail them to the charity. But there may be other places to donate stamps, such as local houses of worship. You might also consider donating them to a community club or school whose members would turn the stamps into art.

If something isn’t useful or significant to you, you might as well pass it on. Regarding stamps, they may be meaningful to you in another capacity – or they may be worthwhile to others.
