This CBC headline certainly caught my attention a couple of weeks ago. It is a story about a family that unknowingly hired disreputable movers. They lost thousands of dollars’ worth of possessions and irreplaceable mementos. For a move manager like me, this story is heartbreaking because it didn’t have to happen.
Unfortunately, this family learned the hard way that the moving industry is not regulated. Anyone with a truck can call themselves a mover. That’s pretty frightening when you consider you will be turning over all your household possessions, treasured memorabilia, and confidential documents to people who may not have any training or experience.
How to Find a Reputable Mover
The Canadian Association of Movers (CAM) is an excellent resource for finding a reputable moving company. They have a directory for local, national, and international movers. They also recommend contacting your local Better Business Bureau to examine reviews and get more details.
CAM has a wealth of information. They specify the principles of moving, and most importantly, have a list of consumer alerts. Did you know that some shady movers “hijack” reputable company brand names and use them in their online listings and ads? These unscrupulous companies will even plagiarize logos, text, and images from honest and trustworthy businesses. Always do thorough research before hiring a moving company to ensure you are hiring a genuine company and not some fly-by-night copycat.
