Where to Sit in the Office to Be More Productive

Many companies have permanently moved to a hybrid working model. As a result, they adopt “hot desking,” where employees can choose whichever desk they want when working on site. The location of the desk can influence an employee’s productivity. For that reason, CNBC asked my opinion on where to sit in the office to be more productive.

Type of Work

Where you choose to sit depends on the type of work you will be doing. For example, if you are working with team members on a project, sitting close to them would increase collaboration and move the project forward. Sometimes you may be in the office to use specific resources (e.g., photocopiers, printers, etc.). A desk close to the supply room would save time and effort as you wouldn’t have to run around the building each time you needed something.

If you have in-person meetings, choosing a desk near the conference room would be your best option. However, you may want to be in a private, quiet corner far from the hustle and bustle for online meetings. Does your work involve staring at a computer screen most of the day? Pick a desk close to the window so you can look outside and focus your eyes – and attention somewhere else throughout the day.

Personality

Feng Shui refers to a “power position” where your back is against a wall. “You feel much more in power when you have a strong backing, with a wall behind you, for example, which is a signal of strength, but what that really means intuitively is that nobody behind you can come and sneak up on you.” Consider this principle when choosing where to sit in the office. It might help you be more productive.

Some people have a hard time concentrating when there are too many distractions. These people should choose a desk in a calmer zone if they need to focus. Those who are more extroverted may have trouble concentrating if their area is too quiet. Choose a spot that best suits your work style.
