Let’s Talk About Your Garage…

When’s the last time you walked into your garage and actually felt good about it?

For many, the garage is the most neglected space in the home. It’s where things go to disappear. Outgrown sports gear. Forgotten boxes from the last move. Mystery tools. Paint cans. Even old electronics we promise to recycle “one day.”

We tend to treat the garage as a dumping ground. Open the door, toss it in, and shut it fast before the chaos can stare back. But what if your garage could become a calm, functional, even beautiful space?

Let me show you what’s possible and how Out of Chaos helped one family turn their jam-packed garage into a clean, organized, and useful extension of their home.

Step One: Touch Everything

The family had just moved in together. Their garage was stacked high with boxes, so full you couldn’t walk through it, let alone park a car.

Before we could create order, we had to face the mess head-on. I always say: you can’t organize what you haven’t seen. Every item had to be touched, considered, and sorted. Only then do you begin to understand what you own and what you no longer need.

To help them decide what stayed, I asked questions like:

“When was the last time you used this?”

“Did you even remember you had it?”

“If it disappeared overnight, would you even notice?”

These questions help cut through emotional attachments and focus on what’s truly useful and meaningful. A crucial step when facing years of accumulated “just in case” stuff.

Step Two: Design a Garage That Actually Works

Once we pared things down, we created zones and systems designed to last.

Shelving: We installed galvanized steel shelves that are rust-resistant, durable, and strong enough for heavy storage. No bolts, no fuss. They snap together for quick transformations.

Clear Bins and Labels: Transparent bins with lids protect contents from dust and moisture. Each one was clearly labeled (big, bold, and water resistant) so anyone could find (and return) things easily.

Drop Zone: Near the door, we created a mudroom-style area with spots for each family member’s boots, jackets, bags, and sports gear. This simple zone prevented daily clutter from creeping into the house.

Garage Pantry: Adjustable bins held bulk items like snacks, paper towels, and water (freeing up space in the kitchen and making the garage a true extension of the home).

Rolling Bins: For camping and sports gear, we used wheeled bins. When it’s time for a trip, they just grab and go. No digging required.

Ceiling & Wall Storage: Hooks and racks held bikes, skis, tools, and oversized items. The floor was left almost entirely clear,  and for the first time in years, they could park two cars inside.

Step Three: Create a Maintenance Routine That’s Actually Realistic

One weekend of organizing won’t stick unless there’s a system in place. That’s why we help clients create a simple maintenance rhythm:

  • 10-minute tidy each week (ideally before garbage day)
  • Seasonal reset every 3–4 months
  • Family rule: Everything goes back to its labeled home

For this family, we started small, one corner. Then installed slatwalls, set up bins, labeled everything. We found duplicates of everything (six hoses, four mallets, two identical tents). They donated over 20 items. By the end, they had room to park both cars inside, plus a designated “kid zone” and a tidy workshop area. They told me the garage actually makes them want to go out and do things now.

That’s the power of clarity.

Extra Organizing Tricks You Probably Haven’t Tried

1. Slatwall > Pegboard (Here’s Why)
Slatwalls are customizable, modular, and grow with your life. Unlike pegboards, they don’t limit where hooks or racks go and they’re more secure for heavy-duty tools and sports gear. You can rearrange them as your needs change.

2. Roll Don’t Carry
Get bins with wheels. We recommend using rolling storage for seasonal items because no one wants to deadlift a 40-lb tote full of winter gear off the top shelf in July.

3. Don’t Skip the Labels (Seriously)
You’ve sorted everything. But if there are no labels, no one else in your family knows where anything goes. Clear, large, front-facing labels make it easy for everyone to help keep things tidy, including kids.

4. Use the Ceiling
Most garages have unused vertical space. Install overhead racks for long-term storage like camping gear, seasonal décor, or that Halloween skeleton your kids love. Just make sure everything is in lidded bins to keep out dust and moisture.

5. The “Not Sure Yet” Box
Struggling to part with something? Put it in a box, seal it, write today’s date. If you haven’t opened it in six months… you probably don’t need it.

Not everything belongs in the garage. Just because it fits doesn’t mean it belongs.

Paint cans, old electronics, expired cleaning products don’t just clutter your garage; they can create safety hazards. Use your organizing session to responsibly dispose of anything toxic, expired, or broken.

Bonus tip: Many municipalities have free recycling programs for this kind of stuff. We always have that info handy for my clients. Or check out our list of recommended charities and other resources here.

A Space Reclaimed, and a Lifestyle Shift

What began as a cluttered and overwhelming mess became a space of order, function, and ease. The kids knew where their belongings belonged. The parents finally had room to park inside. And perhaps most importantly, they felt like their garage was now working with them, not against them.

That’s what garage organizing is really about. Not just storage, but simplicity. Peace of mind. Creating systems that support your life, not add to the chaos.

And you don’t have to do it all at once. Start with one corner. One shelf. One bin. Momentum builds, and soon, that space you dreaded becomes one you’re proud of.
