At Out of Chaos, we’re big fans of multi-functional furniture. Naturally, we think a 3-shelf rolling cart is an excellent investment because it keeps your belongings tidy and accessible. They are extremely versatile and can adapt to serve many purposes as you and your family grow and change.

In researching this post, I found dozens and dozens of styles, sizes, and colours of 3-shelf rolling carts. And the creative ways people use them are fantastic – from nightstands in the bedroom to end tables in the living room to storing power tools and hardware. This highly adaptable piece of furniture can get your space out of chaos and into order at a relatively reasonable price. Here are some ways you can use one (or more) to organize your home.

Kitchen

A rolling cart can become an extra countertop and additional storage space in the kitchen. Choose one with lockable rubber wheels and a solid top like this stylish stainless steel kitchen cart. You could also store frequently used ingredients, pots, pans, and cooking utensils on the cart. That way, you can push it closer to the stove when you need it and move it out of the way when you don’t. The 3-shelf rolling cart can also double as a microwave stand. Place the oven on the top shelf and use the other shelves to store microwave-safe dishes (or boxes of popcorn).

Turn the cart into a coffee/tea station with a kettle, coffee/espresso machine, mugs, etc. The cart makes a great snack centre, too. Place snacks and drinks in storage baskets on the shelves and wheel the cart into the TV room so the kids can help themselves while you work in the kitchen. Alternatively, you could use your cart as a minibar. Add an ice bucket and some glasses, and you’ll be ready to manœuver from room to room mixing drinks at your next party.

Laundry Rooms and Bathrooms

These days, laundry rooms are smaller than ever and have limited storage space. A 3-shelf rolling cart can be a storage unit for laundry detergent and other essentials. Add an ironing mat to the top to create an instant ironing board with storage for your iron and more. And because it’s portable, you can roll it out of site when you’re not using it.

Like laundry rooms, bathrooms don’t have much storage space either. Smaller 3-shelf carts can fit under or beside a pedestal sink, providing much-needed space for extra toilet paper, towels, and cosmetics.

Because both laundry rooms and bathrooms are damp, choose a heavy-duty resin (plastic) or powder-coated steel rolling cart. These materials will resist rusting, mould, and mildew.

The Many Ways to Use a 3-Shelf Rolling Cart

Bedrooms

In children’s bedrooms, 3-shelf rolling carts can hold everything you need for changing diapers. You can use the trolleys to store books, clothing, and shoes as the children grow. However, caregivers need to be mindful because these carts can be dangerous for small children because they roll and can tip over.

Home Office

As we mentioned in our post on a portable office for productivity, not everyone has the luxury of a home office or even a dedicated desk. Let a 3-shelf rolling cart come to your rescue! It can store your office supplies and paper files or use it to create a printer stand. Add a power bar to the trolley, and it will double as a charging station for your devices. You can even get carts with built-in power outlets and keyboard trays. Of course, they are not the most stylish, but they can be very useful.

Arts and Crafts Station

Artists, crafters (and parents) will appreciate the versatility of a 3-shelf rolling cart as a dedicated storage system for art and craft supplies. Whether you or your children enjoy colouring, painting, sewing, or other hobby, a cart can store and organize your essential supplies. And you’ll be able to move everything you need to whatever comfortable location you want to work in.

Indoor/Outdoor Garden

Gardening enthusiasts can use a 3-shelf rolling cart to create a mobile indoor/outdoor garden. Choose a trolley with solid shelves, or place trays on the shelves to catch water and soil. Choose a trolley with solid rubber wheels to move your plants closer to windows, out on your balcony, or under grow lights when needed.
